Exhibitions: what’s finishing soon and what’s new
Last chance to take in some of the season’s major exhibitions in Madrid’s museums and exhibition spaces, like theEscher show, at the Gaviria Palace until 24 September; Treasures from the Hispanic Society of America. Visions of the Hispanic World, at the Prado Museum until 10 September; Kobro and Strzemiński and Lee Lozano, at the Reina Sofía Museum (until the 18th and 25th of September, respectively); and Renaissance Venice, at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum until 24 September.
For information about interesting new exhibitions in the city, see the latest issue of “Madrid is Culture”, which contains details of the more than 40 exhibitions scheduled by Madrid’s museums and cultural centres until December. Highlights include Picasso-Lautrec at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum; Mariano Fortuny (1838–1874) at the Prado; Zuloaga in the Paris of the Belle Epoque 1889-1914, at the Mapfre Foundation; and Alphonse Mucha at the Palacio de Gaviria.

| | Apertura 2017
Madrid’s art galleries open their new exhibitions simultaneously, and with extended opening hours, in what has become an indispensable event in the art world. Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend is organised by the 46 galleries that make up gallery association Arte_Madrid. The initiative has two objectives: to stimulate public interest in contemporary art, and to attract international attention to Madrid’s art scene. From 14 to 16 September, the eighth Apertura Madrid will commence, with free activities for all audiences.

Dcode Festival
The Dcode music festival has a spectacular line-up. Eighteen non-stop hours of superb music in one of the city’s green zones, the Complutense University campus, with appearances by top artists and groups like Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Band of Horses, The Kooks, Liam Gallagher, Daughter, Varry Brava, Iván Ferreiro, Miss Caffeina, Milky Chance and La Femme. With performances by today’s top national and international indie rock artists, the festival, on 9 September, will be a family-friendly event with a specific family area and fun activities for kids.

Shoppers have a big night ahead of them in Madrid in September. Vogue Fashion’s Night Out, sponsored by the renowned magazine since 2009, has become an irresistible magnet for lovers of the fashion industry. Boutiques, hotels, restaurants and even Madrid’s art galleries get involved and participate in an exciting programme of parallel activities.

Les Luthiers: ¡Chist! Antología
After receiving the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, the Argentinian quintet are coming back to Madrid with their new show: ¡Chist! Antología, from 19 to 24 September at the Municipal Conference Centre. Just like their previous production Lutherapia, this two-hour-long show packed with humour and creativity proves beyond doubt that after even 50 years and 170 shows performed in front of over 9 million spectators, they remain as witty as ever.

Final leg of the Vuelta a España
The streets of Madrid will fill with cheering crowds to welcome the winner of the 72nd Vuelta a España on 10 September. Spain’s capital will host the final 58.4-kilometre leg of this competition through the centre of Madrid in a circuit in which cyclists will do nine laps and then finish in the Plaza de Cibeles. Prior to this, the circuit will also host La Marcha de la Vuelta, the Vuelta Junior and the Vuelta de la Mujer women's race.

The capital city’s free monthly bilingual magazine visits Apertura, contemporary art fair Estampa and Dcode Fest, all happening in Madrid this month.
