The result of the vote held on Friday in the Lower House of Parliament, with 170 votes in favour of the investiture of Mariano Rajoy as President of the Government and 180 votes against, means it is necessary to continue negotiating to avoid a call for a third round of elections within a year.

During his investiture speech, the acting President of the Government and candidate for re-election, Mariano Rajoy, offered pacts to the other parties on matters of education, pensions, energy, R&D+i, regional financing and gender-based violence. Moreover, he called for shared responsibility to obtain a sufficient majority and hence avoid fresh elections.

The acting government also allocated 2 million euros to the air route between Madrid and Menorca in order to guarantee a direct connection between the mainland and the island in low season. It will also improve security at the Spanish Embassy in Kabul.
