SPAIN THIS WEEK







The President of the Government reported that climate change, the economy, serious migratory crises and the fight against terrorism were the main topics on the first day of the G-20 Summit held in Antalya (Turkey). On another note, the President of the Government declared that he can confirm the death of only one Spaniard in Paris.

Before taking part in the Summit of G-20 leaders, held in the Turkish city of Antalya, the President of the Government visited the Spanish contingent deployed in Adana to convey his gratitude to the Spanish servicemen based there for their efforts to help provide security in the region.

The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, in a speech at Moncloa Palace on the occasion of Friday's attacks in Paris, asserted that we are all united in the fight against terrorism and that "violence and senselessness will not be allowed to sway our shared democratic convictions". He also announced that the National Security Council was called for Saturday, and the members of the State Pact against Jihadi Terrorism will be called shortly.

Following the Valletta Migration Summit, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, argued that we must manage both the consequences of the migrant crisis and, "more importantly", its underlying causes. Among the results of the summit, he highlighted the creation of a Trust Fund for Africa with a provision of 1.8 billion euros.

Following the extraordinary Council of Ministers, the President of the Government gave a press briefing to report on the government's appeal to the Constitutional Court to suspend the resolution approved by the Regional Parliament of Catalonia on Monday, 9 November. The President of the Government said that this appeal is being lodged to defend "the rights of all citizens" and "especially the rights of Catalan citizens". "It is about defending an entire country", he added.

During the programme recorded at Moncloa Palace, Mariano Rajoy spoke about Spanish sport and commented on the need to approve a Patronage and Sponsorship Act focused on the more modest teams. He also tackled other issues such as the situation in Catalonia. The programme, hosted by José Ramón de la Morena, also included the participation of the manager of the Spanish national football team, Vicente del Bosque.

On Tuesday morning at Moncloa Palace, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, presented footballer Iker Casillas with the Great Cross of the Order of Sporting Merit, an award approved by the Council of Ministers on 17 July. The President of the Government explained that this award has been presented to Iker Casillas both for his sporting merit and for his personal values.

The total sum of the funds distributed among the regional governments for 2015 to foster the return of the unemployed to the labour market amounts to 1.55 billion euros, 25% up on last year. Moreover, the government allocated 71 million euros to university faculty training and amended the Regulation on the Economic and Fiscal Regime of the Canary Islands.
