MADRID IS CULTURE
The new edition of Madrid is Culture is now available. The newsletter covers over 40 exhibitions that can be enjoyed in Madrid’s main cultural institutions from September to December. Published by the municipal company Madrid Destino, it offers relevant information in both Spanish and English on these interesting shows, and includes a brief description of each of their most significant aspects.
Of particular note are the exhibitions Kandinsky: A Retrospective at CentroCentro Cibeles; Titanic: The Exhibition at Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa; Ingres at the Prado Museum; Edvard Munch at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum; and Constant: New Babylon at the Reina Sofía Museum. Other highlights include Alvar Aalto 1898-1976 at CaixaForum Madrid; Josef Koudelka: Photographs at the Mapfre Foundation; Theo Jansen: Strandbeest at Telefónica Foundation Space; and Young Ladies’ Residence (1915-1936), on its 100th Anniversary, at the Residencia de Estudiantes.

Theatre Premieres at Fernán Gómez
After a break for the summer, the curtain at Teatro Fernán Gómez will rise again in September with three new productions: La balsa de Medusa (Sala Jardiel Poncela), which reflects on change and the resistance and fear it can inspire; Windermere Club (Sala Guirau), a musical directed by Gabriel Olivares starring Natalia Millán; and Yo me bajo en la próxima, ¿y usted? (Sala Pequeña). The last of these is an integration-oriented project that teams disabled and non-disabled actors up in a joint initiative led by Varela Producciones and the Repsol Foundation. Even more treats are in store for October.

Flamenco Joven at Conde Duque
Talented young flamenco artists gather together at Conde Duque to delight fans of the art, declared part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with a wonderful selection of performances. Of particular note in the lineup are flamenco dancers like La Tati, who will present her new show Retorno, and artists including J. Enrique Morente, Rancapino Chico, Gema Moneo, Juan Habichuela Nieto, Belén López and María Mezcle. The event will be held from 23 to 26 September in the theatre at this cultural centre.

Apertura Madrid
This annual event turns the capital into an international hub of contemporary art. During Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend, which will take place from 10 to 12 September, 45 of Madrid’s art galleries will simultaneously unveil new exhibitions and extend their opening hours over the three days in order to share these shows with the public. The event attracts collectors, experts and curators from all over the world and will be rounded off with parallel activities, performances and guided tours.

Japan Weekend Madrid
On 19 and 20 September, Japanese culture will flood Casa de Campo Park as the Glass Pavilion hosts the 9th edition of Japan Weekend Madrid. The event will feature a varied programme of video games, screenings of films and series, lectures, workshops, martial arts displays and competitions. New this year is a special exhibition on the Mazinger Z series as well as the presence of the creator of Blue Girl and the voice actors of the Dragon Ball Z series.

Sama Sama Live
More infoDance and percussion group Mayumaná and Canadian troupe Cirque du Soleil have chosen Madrid for the premiere of their show Sama Sama. The production is the first of its kind, featuring interactive elements used together to build a universe of creativity where audience members can play and have fun, casting themselves in a starring role through the use of music and movement. Sama Sama is suitable for all audiences and will begin its run on 19 November at Madrid Arena. |
