MADRID IS CULTURE



Madrid museums and cultural institutions are staging a wide range of photography, painting and sculpture exhibitions, turning the city into a leading international capital of culture. Discover the most popular shows, on till the end of April at 37 venues across the city, in the bilingual leaflet Madrid is Culture, published by the municipal company Madrid Destino.
Among the exhibitions featured are those at the Prado Museum (‘Ten Picassos from the Kunstmuseum Basel’), the Reina Sofia (’White Fire’), the Thyssen-Bornemisza (‘Raoul Dufy’), CentroCentro Cibeles (’Translucent Skin’), the National Library (‘Saint Teresa of Avila: The proof of my truth’) and the Royal Palace (‘Portraits in the Royal Collections’). The leaflet is available from the city of Madrid's official tourism website esMADRID.com and at tourist centres and information points in the capital.

Easter
From late March until 5 April, the capital will be celebrating Easter. As is customary, the streets of Madrid city centre will play host to greatly anticipated processions, including the Christ of the Halberdiers, the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Sweet Name and Jesus of Nazareth of Medinaceli. What is more, the capital's churches and cultural spaces will organize sacred music concerts, in addition to other entertainment and dining options to be enjoyed in the city during this period. The event will close with the traditional tamborrada drum festival in Plaza Mayor.

Ellas Crean Festival
As part of the celebrations to commemorate International Women's Day (8 March), Madrid will play host to the 11th Ellas Crean Festival. This cultural event, organised from the Conde Duque cultural centre, features a complete multidisciplinary programme of concerts, debates, theatre, dance, exhibitions and film screenings, with the participation and collaboration of numerous Madrid cultural institutions. This year, there will be special activities to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Saint Teresa of Avila.

5th International Magic Festival at Circo Price
Teatro Circo Price will hold the fifth International Magic Festival from 5 March to 5 April. This event, led by Jorge Blass, consists of two different shows: Tiempo de Magia (Magic Time) and Magia de Cerca (Close-up Magic). In the former, illusionists of different nationalities and disciplines create a show where magic merges with theatre, music, humour and the circus. The latter features card manipulation, micro-magic and other specialities close-up, from the hands of international artists.
